WuXi NextCODE Artificial Intelligence Used to Advance Precision Therapy for Rare Genetic Disorders of Obesity

SHANGHAI and CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts and REYKJAVIK, Iceland, Jan. 9, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- WuXi NextCODE, the emerging global standard platform for genomic data, today announced a partnership with Rhythm Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: RYTM), a biopharmaceutical company aimed at developing and commercializing therapies for the treatment of rare genetic disorders of obesity, under which Rhythm is applying WuXi NextCODE's proprietary deep learning capabilities to identify key genetic markers for rare metabolic syndromes. The goal is to use that information to optimize the development of Rhythm's investigational compounds. Financial terms were not disclosed.  

The first phase of the partnership involved mining WuXi NextCODE's knowledgebase of all major reference datasets to identify all rare sequence variants in the POMC, PCSK1, and LEPR genes in the MC4R pathway. This is a key biological pathway in humans that regulates weight by increasing energy expenditure and reducing appetite. WuXi NextCODE's advanced artificial intelligence (AI) laboratory then applied its proprietary DeepCODE algorithm to score the variants for their predictive impact on obesity. Testing people living with obesity for the highest impact variants in these genes may enable the identification of those who may be candidates for treatment with therapies developed to target the MC4R pathway, as well as to a broader understanding of the mechanisms through which this pathway contributes to obesity.

CLX First to Launch Global A2P RCS Enterprise Messaging API With SMS fall-back

Late last year the GSMA confirmed that 50 mobile operators have already launched RCS and that it currently has 138 million users worldwide, forecast to grow to 350 million in 2018 and over a billion by 2019.  

SMS fall-back guarantees the delivery of messages either as a rich message for Android handsets that have RCS enabled or as a standard SMS message if an RCS client is not present on the device.

The RCS Universal Profile 2.0 standard allows rich content features such as images, videos and intuitive reply buttons that can link to further menus and functions. It's designed to promote two-way interaction between the enterprise and the customer, enabling enhanced customer-service functions including chatbot interactivity.

RCS messaging also includes read and received receipts so that marketers can perform A/B testing, gauge the success of messaging campaigns and make changes on the fly to improve customer engagement.

IBM Breaks Records to Top U.S. Patent List for 25th Consecutive Year

IBM Inventors Receive Record 9,043 Patents in 2017 in Areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Cloud, Blockchain, Cybersecurity and Quantum Computing

ARMONK, New York, Jan. 9, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) inventors received a record 9,043 patents in 2017, marking the company's 25th consecutive year of U.S. patent leadership and crossing the 100,000-patent milestone. The new patents were granted to a diverse group of more than 8,500 IBM researchers, engineers, scientists and designers in 47 different U.S. states and 47 countries.

Inventors from IBM Research discuss Maja Vukovic's patent for a system that detects and counteracts cyber attacks, one of the more than 1,400 AI patents IBM inventors received in 2017 alone. 2017 marks the 25th consecutive year that IBM has been named the leader in granted U.S. patents, with a record 9,043 patents.

Another set of innovations helps solve one of artificial intelligence's current limits: lack of personalization, which can hinder how AI communicates with people. IBM inventors also patented significant inventions in emerging areas like quantum computing, including a new way for improving a quantum computer's ability to acquire and retain information ? otherwise known as signal readout fidelity. This can lead to efficiency in the components necessary to build a quantum computing system.

Other patented innovations from IBM inventors in 2017 include:

  • A machine learning system designed to shift control between an autonomous vehicle and a human driver as needed, such as in an emergency.
  • A method that leverages blockchain technology to reduce the number of steps involved in settling transactions between multiple business parties, even those that are not trusted and might otherwise require a third-party clearinghouse to execute.
  • A technique that automatically elevates the security protection of a mobile device when it determines that device is located far from its owner and is likely under someone else's control.

MT5598 brings MediaTek AI enhancements that enable voice control, plus audience, environmental and content awareness to SmartTV's. Visteon Introduces DriveCore? Autonomous Driving Platform to Accelerate Adoption of Self-Driving Technology

Designed to accelerate the development and commercialization of autonomous driving technology, DriveCore? is the first solution to allow automakers to build autonomous driving solutions quickly and in an open collaboration model.

Visteon tests its DriveCore(tm) autonomous driving platform at The American Center for Mobility in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

DriveCore? was designed as a complete technology platform, consisting of the hardware, in-vehicle middleware and PC-based software toolset needed to develop machine learning algorithms for autonomous driving applications of Level 3 and above. Building on Visteon's success with a centralized computing approach, DriveCore? will provide automakers a fail-safe domain controller, with a high degree of computing power scalability, which  supports the integration of data from multiple camera, Lidar and radar sensors.

  • Compute is a modular, scalable computing hardware platform that can easily be adapted to all levels of automated driving. It is designed to deliver from 500 gigaflops to 20 teraflops of processing power (with existing Systems on Chip) in a scalable manner, independent of the type of central processing unit (CPU) used. It will support NVIDIA, Freescale, Qualcomm and, later, other processor types seamlessly ? protecting an automaker's investment in this technology.
  • Runtime is in-vehicle middleware that provides a secure framework to enable applications and algorithms to communicate in a real-time, high-performance environment. It enables sensor fusion in a sensor-independent manner, so sensors can be upgraded as new capabilities become available, such as radar going from 2-D to 3-D.
  • Studio is a PC-based development environment that enables automakers to create and support an ecosystem of algorithm developers, unlocking innovation potential through an open framework for sensor-based artificial intelligence algorithm development. Studio allows easy integration of third-party algorithms and access to real-life sensor data ? complemented by a simulation, validation and benchmarking environment for algorithms ranging from object detection to camera-based lane detection.

Consistent with the goal of creating an open collaboration model for automakers, Visteon is also announcing four new technology partners as part of the DriveCoreTM introduction:  

  • DeepScale uses deep learning to create an integrated model of the environment in real-time, from any combination of sensors. Then, DeepScale's deep neural networks (DNNs) add the perception capabilities needed for automated driving.
  • STEER provides a fully automated parking solution, in which the car drops off passengers at a designated point, drives itself to the nearest automated parking zone, waits for a "summon signal," then drives to the designated pick-up point.
  • StradVision deploys machine learning algorithms to build advanced object detection and recognition software.
  • Automotive Artificial Intelligence provides a graphical simulation environment, offering intelligent traffic and traffic scenarios, which runs in conjunction with DriveCore? Studio.
